The Solar Vox (which comes to us via Makezine) got its start when the designer saw media coverage on the “dangerous makeshift charging stations” being used by those affected by recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. He wanted to create a solar charger that was light, compact and rugged, and could be used anywhere in the world. The result was an off grid charger with a unique, four-way design that allows it to harvest the rays of the sun at four different angles; it can charge cell phones, iPods, and other devices. It also has the capability to charge two standard “AA” rechargeable batteries and is USB-compliant.

So far, it sounds like many of the great concept designs we cover here at EarthTechling–but there’s an important twist. Rather than waiting for an electronics manufacturer to come along and take him up on this design, Eric Botzen, via his website, Botzen Design, has gone ahead and manufactured the Solar Vox, right there in Detroit. This is happening already: On Nov. 18 a club-goer snapped a picture of an allegedly vomit- and urine-soaked toy gorilla strapped to the grille of a police car parked in front of a popular hip-hop club in Portland, Ore. The picture triggered a minor scandal, forcing the Portland police department to explain why the incident wasn't racist.

Every so often, I forget to charge the gizmo that does most of my work--the Blackberry--and provides entertainment--the iPod or Kindle.
