Wireless Video Doorbell Intercom Keep us Safe

Wireless video doorbell intercom, the cameras, gadgets linked to the Internet is keeping us safe.

Steve Tubman makes use of his laptop computer to view the wireless video doorbell intercom pointed at his home's front door. "I can see whether the mailman has been there," says the director of corporate sales and operations for Henderson Security. Gilles Chasles logs onto the Web to monitor the security systems set up at his cottage. Welcome to the world of 21st-century home security, a world replete with cameras, devices and interactive devices linked to the Web. When used in combination with the elderly style, common-sense fundamentals, like nice locks, they permit homeowners to do much over hope nothing happens when they are away. Locks, keys and barriers are the first line of defence, and the first thing Chasles of City Locksmith looks at when evaluating home security.

A solid lock is a must, and there's different ways to improve the wireless video doorbell intercom -- deadbolts of hardened steel, for example, or keys that cannot be copied. Chasles also suggests steel bars for basement windows, for multi-level houses where the homeowners' bedroom is far away from potential points of entry. "It's not a giant expense -- $50 or $75 per window, depending on the size." Gary Bauder of HomeCheckers, an Ottawa-based company that monitors homes when people are away, says that patio doors are vulnerable, and recommends they be reinforced with security bars.

Monitoring cameras can be linked to the Net so that homeowners can see what is going on no matter where they are in the world, as long as they have an Net connection. Some wireless video doorbell intercom permit the monitoring camera images to be viewed on their BlackBerry or iPhone. It is feasible to set up cameras to take pics of somebody ringing your doorbell, and view those pics when you have time. Other systems let you unlock your door remotely using your cell phone. The high-tech systems can include sensors, as well as cameras.

A New Solar Charger Product: Solar Vox

Don't you want to support green product innovation? Check out the Solar Vox, a solar charger with unique aesthetics developed by Eric Botzen, an industrial and product design living and working in Detroit.

The Solar Vox (which comes to us via Makezine) got its start when the designer saw media coverage on the “dangerous makeshift charging stations” being used by those affected by recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. He wanted to create a solar charger that was light, compact and rugged, and could be used anywhere in the world. The result was an off grid charger with a unique, four-way design that allows it to harvest the rays of the sun at four different angles; it can charge cell phones, iPods, and other devices. It also has the capability to charge two standard “AA” rechargeable batteries and is USB-compliant.

So far, it sounds like many of the great concept designs we cover here at EarthTechling–but there’s an important twist. Rather than waiting for an electronics manufacturer to come along and take him up on this design, Eric Botzen, via his website, Botzen Design, has gone ahead and manufactured the Solar Vox, right there in Detroit. You can pre-order yours today (although a price has not yet been specified).

Will Cell Phone Signal Jammer Be Popular As Cell Phone?

Cell-phone signal jammer already available on the Internet to security honchos and average. Cell phone signal jammer become surprisingly useful (and widely used) tool, and they could easily become as popular as cell phones themselves.

A cellular "security bubble" in London could have protected Bush from a very real threat: terrorists who use cell phones to detonate bombs from miles away, or even another country. By connecting a cell phone to hidden explosives, and then calling that phone, one can detonate a bomb (the electrical charge that activates the ringer on the cell phone serves as the triggering signal). In May 2002, Palestinian militants in Tel Aviv nearly caused a major explosion when they placed a bomb wired to a cell phone in a fuel truck headed for Israel's largest fuel depot. (The bomb detonated, but the fire was put out.)

In the United States, actively jamming a cell-phone signal is illegal. The FCC, which is the government agency in charge of regulating the airwaves, has established severe penalties for doing so. If you're caught at your local restaurant with the SH066PL2A/B, it's possible you could face an $11,000 fine and a one-year jail term. Possible, but apparently highly unlikely. It seems that the FCC has never charged anyone with this crime, even though the American market is one of the most important when it comes to selling cell phone signal jammer. One distributor (who wished to remain anonymous) told me they've exported approximately 300 jammers to the United States this year, more than to any other country. The exporter claims that buyers include restaurants, schools (including some universities, which have installed the technology to stop students from wirelessly diddling away on their phones during lectures), and personal users.

While the legality of this technology is unclear, odds are that the demand for such products will surge in the near future, as analysts predict that within five years there could be up to 1 billion camera phones in circulation worldwide. We may find ourselves in a "bottom up" surveillance society, where anyone can record anything, and send sound and image out to the Internet for those who want to watch and listen in. This is happening already: On Nov. 18 a club-goer snapped a picture of an allegedly vomit- and urine-soaked toy gorilla strapped to the grille of a police car parked in front of a popular hip-hop club in Portland, Ore. The picture triggered a minor scandal, forcing the Portland police department to explain why the incident wasn't racist.

Laptop Solar Charger For Outdoors

Every so often, I forget to charge the gizmo that does most of my work--the Blackberry--and provides entertainment--the iPod or Kindle.

It's not so bad when the destination is a motel room. But when it's a tent and the site doesn't have a plug-in, I'm powerless.

The laptop solar charger by Highgear is a palm-sized device that stores sunlight, room light or a charge from a laptop USB port and allows you to keep the gizmos going.

The price is reasonable: $50. The charger comes with a variety of power tips to adapt to a bunch of electronic devices. It held up to being crushed in my pack for a week and has a built-in carabiner to hold it in place (if you remember to use it). The unit charges quickly and has an indicator on the back that tells you how much power remains stored.

It seems to quickly lose its stored charge if it sits around for a couple of days in the dark. And it doles out less than an hour of juice after an eight-hour charge in the sun.

That said, there are times when you'd do anything to be able to make a couple of calls or listen to some tunes before zipping up the sleeping bag. For those times, the laptop solar charger is a nice companion to have.

Examples

The Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit can be attached to any bicycle to power up devices from the pedaling motion of the bike’s rider. The electricity generator is powered by the front bicycle wheel as a rider pedals and transfers electricity to a charger attached to the handlebar, which plugs in to a phone. A 10-minute journey at four miles per hour produces around 28 minutes of talk time or 37 hours of standby time.

The BioLite transportable cooking stove is a working prototype that is designed to revolutionize cooking for the 3 billion individuals who cook with wood or other solid fuels. As the fuel burns, a fraction of the thermal energy produced is harvested, converted to electricity, and used to power a tiny fan that aids combustion efficiency. Excess electricity is made obtainable to users for charging tiny electronic devices such as cell rings and LED lights.

The Appropriate Expertise Collaborative, in partnership with engineering students and professors at Los angeles State University, has developed a refrigeration expertise that requires no moving parts and receives its power from solar energy. The Solar Vaccine refrigerator makes use of the heat from the sun like a solar charger to generate condensation within the unit, which in turn creates a cooling effect.
